Not a moment too soon

River rushes forward with impressive certainty
white-frothed corners like spittle needing wiped away
gushing roaring speeding onward, nothing challenges
this force of nature until, a flicker
barely enough to be seen
a flash of fin, the stealth of flight
something catches my eye
flying fish defying gravity
leaps upwards and over
tailfin shimmying before
it is gone, upriver, disappeared forever
now a memory, but then I check
my captured photos and it is there
in all its glory so elegant and strong
mid-air with unrivalled flair
caught on camera like the phenomenon it is.
I am left in awe, dumbstruck
unable to quite believe my luck
but thankful I was there
exactly where I was supposed to be
and not a moment too soon.
